Excessive skin and bags around the eyes can give a very aged and tired appearance. Eyelid surgery, also called blepharoplasty, looks to remove the excess skin and bags improving the appearance of the eyes.
Eyelid surgery is one of the most popular procedures that Dr. Hammond performs. This surgery can give a much more youthful and alert appearance by eliminated the overlapping skin and reducing the bagginess of the lower eyelids.
There are several factors that Dr. Hammond looks for when you come in for eyelid surgery.
- Excessive skin that is hanging over the natural folds of the upper eyelids
- Loose skin hanging over the upper eyelashes
- Puffiness of the upper and/or lower eyelids making a tired/aged appearance
Dr. Hammond always takes into consideration the position of the brows during your consultation. Remember the eyelids are part of the face. The drooping of the upper eyelid oftentimes is due to relaxation of the forehead skin and eyebrows. A brow lift is often done in conjunction with the eyelid surgery.
The incisions are designed so that the resultant scars will be well concealed within the eyelid creases. The upper eyelid incision is made within the natural crease of the eyelid allowing removal/repositioning of the fat deposits, tightening of muscles and removal of excessive skin.
The lower incision in most cases is made inside the lower eyelid. This is call a transconjunctival incision and is nice because there is no resulting scar that is seen. This incision allows access to the underlying fat which is then partly removed and partly repositioned. However, no skin is removed in this technique. The lower eyelid skin is tightened with a laser or chemical peel.
Where is the Procedure Performed?
The procedure is done in office in most cases and takes between 60 to 90 min for both the upper and lower eyelids. Most patients report minimal to moderate discomfort. You can expect some swelling and bruising that may persist for up to a week or longer. We allow our patients to wear makeup to conceal any remaining discoloration within a week and most people will return to normal activity within 10 days.
